Built in the early 1800’s, this former Courthouse and Barracks had lost many original internal features due to previous inappropriate interventions, down through the years. The challenge was to restore the structure back to its former glory. The overriding conservation objective was to ensure that all further interventions be minimal, appropriate, reversible, and to be sympathetic to this iconic local building.
Non-original internal walls, enclosing claustrophobic internal cellular spaces, give way to facilitate the creation of large living spaces, as demanded by modern living standards. A double height kitchen space is carved out from within the former court room, with a striking light feature creating a dramatic space. Natural, breathable, contemporary insulants are combined with traditional lime mortars and renders to create a healthy internal environment for the occupants and also safeguard the fabric of this historic structure for future generations.
