The brief was to extend the existing two storey, detached dwelling to accommodate a living room, gymnasium and den, which could double up as a bedroom. The most significant challenge arose from the fact that the dwelling experienced overlooking by adjoining properties, being located in the heart of a residential estate.
The juxtaposition of the strategically located new side and rear extensions, projecting from the original dwelling, gives shape to a new semi-enclosed courtyard.
The courtyard acts as a sun trap and provides private, sheltered and functional outdoor space, whilst also protecting the privacy of the new spaces contained within.
The contemporary, minimalist design of the rear extension, complete with its glazed link, enhances the connection between the old and new. The extension also allows continued natural light into the ground floor kitchen and first floor bedrooms.
The side extension retains the language of the existing building, with hip roof and stone cladding. The design intention was to be respectful of its location within an estate of similar styles and to appear as if it had always existed.
